AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD BREED OVERVIEW

“A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” Josh Billings
Size: A standard Australian Shepherd can range in height from 18-23″ tall at the shoulder and weigh from 40-65lb. Females are typically smaller than males. Our Australian Shepherds average around the 40-55lb and are within the 18-23″ height range.
Life Expectancy & Health: An Australian Shepherd can live 12-15 years, sometimes longer! They are generally very healthy dogs. Our parent dogs have been selected to ensure the longevity of your pet. (Click our OFA and PawPrint Pedigree Icons at the bottom of the page to view our parent dog’s health testing. Results can also be found on the Parents page on the main menu.)
Energy Level: On average Australian Shepherds are high energy dogs. They require mental stimulation not just exercise. They are very quick to learn and the mental stimulation can be just as beneficial as physical. Our dogs here at Mud Path are both low to medium energy dogs. They love to play, go on adventures, and learn new tasks. Each of them have the “Aussie Off Switch” meaning when it’s time to settle down, they settle and know when to be calm.
Temperament & Trainability: Australian Shepherds are a biddable breed meaning they want to please you. Early socialization and obedience training are key for any breed but Aussies thrive. They are very intuitive and learn quickly making the training process not just quick but fun and rewarding due to their quick progress. We strive to provide our dogs with the best tools to help them live their best lives. Learning new things, experiencing new people, animals, and sounds. They mold to every situation. They’re great family dogs including with small children and other pets.
Grooming: Australian Shepherds have a double-layer coat (extra fluff!). The outer layer is the layer that will help to keep water and dirt off your dog. The under layer is the “insulation layer” which helps to keep your dogs warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Double-layer coats do not get shaved down as it will deter the outer layer from growing back properly. Typical grooming may require weekly or less brushings, some trims every once in a while, and regular baths and nail trims. Australian Shepherds do shed. More so in the spring and again in the fall. With regular brushing, baths and proper nutrition, shedding is greatly reduced.
Coat Colors: As stated on the homepage, we have several potential colors coming from out litters. You can visit the ASCA website (Australian Shepherd Club of America) to get the full list of color combinations. At Mud Path Australian Shepherds there is potential for blue merle with copper and white trim, red merle with copper and white trim, red tri-color (red, white, copper), and black tri-color (black, white, copper) in each litter.
Eye Colors: Aussies also have multiple eye colors. Brown, blue, hazel, amber, green, marbled and even heterochromia meaning two different colored eyes! Our lines have strong blue-eyed traits. There is variability with each pairing.
